Step Afrika

COLUMBUS, OHIO-- Ohio Dominican University is pleased to announce the upcoming performance of STEP AFRIKA! on Monday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Matesich Theatre located in Erskine Hall. ODU’s own dance troupe, Mila Dance, will open the performance.

Sponsored by Student Activities, the International Office, Panther Activities Council and the Black Student Union, admission to the performance is free.

Step Afrika is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in December 1994, Step Afrika reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North and South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. Based in Washington, D.C., the company has been featured on CNN, BET, PBS & NPR.

Stepping is a unique dance tradition created by African-American college students, where the body is used as an instrument to create rhythms and sounds through footsteps, clapping and the spoken word. The tradition grew out of song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s.

Erskine Hall is located on ODU’s main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road. Parking is available in the Visitors Lots directly west of Sunbury Road.
