Center for Dominican Studies Presents St. Catherine of Siena Performance

April 2, 2007

COLUMBUS, OH – Sister Nancy Murray, O.P., will present St. Catherine of Siena, a one-woman performance, at Ohio Dominican University on Thursday, April 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel in Sansbury Hall, located on ODU’s main campus,1216 Sunbury Road.

Originally named Caterina Benincasa, St. Catherine was the 24th child born into her family in Siena, Italy, in 1347. She later became a lay member of the Dominican Order. Catherine cared for terminally ill patients, ministered to those on death row, and provided spiritual direction to men and women in search of God. Catherine died in 1380 at age 33. With a few props and her imagination, Sister Nancy transforms herself into a strong and passionate Catherine.

The play was originally written by Sr. Nancy and Sr. Kathy Harkins. Sr. Nancy then wrote her own version which she has presented in English and Spanish throughout America, Rome, Peru, Ecuador, Trinidad, the Phillipines, Taiwan, East Timor and Santa Lucia.

Sr. Nancy, a Dominican Sister of Adrian, Michigan, was born in Wilmette, Illinois, as the third of nine children. Her brother is actor Bill Murray. After going through formation, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Theatre from Barry University in Miami and a master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University in Chicago. She spent 13 years teaching drama, dance and religious education and becoming involved in ministry work.

The performances are free and open to the public; but reservations are required.  Free parking is available in the Visitor’s Lot west of Sunbury Road.
