"Dragon Dance" by Mel Rozen

COLUMBUS, OH - Ohio Dominican University will host an artist’s reception for its newest exhibition, Mel Rozen Sabbatical Exhibition: A Calligraphic Journey, on Sunday, January 21 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Wehrle Gallery. The exhibition features the works of Mel Rozen, Professor of Art at Ohio Dominican University.

Mel RozenA Calligraphic Journey features a collection of calligraphic art made of brushed ink and paper and reflects both the largest and smallest works Rozen has ever done on paper. The paintings highlight non-traditional calligraphic forms showcasing lettering and symbols from multicultural sources.

“My intention along this journey was not to perfect a rendering of an alphabet or to illustrate words of wisdom from philosophy or literature,” said Rozen. “Instead, what I sought were ways to use letters, signs and symbols to form an expressive visual message in a calligraphic style.”

Rozen has been a faculty member at Ohio Dominican since 1973. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from Cleveland Institute of Art and his Master of Fine Art from University of Pennsylvania. He went on to attend Temple University and The Ohio State University for additional studies. Rozen has had numerous major exhibits in Central Ohio as well as having works in public collections.

The exhibition is open to the public and will be on display in the gallery through March 2, 2007. Wehrle Gallery is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It is located on the main level of Wehrle Hall, on Ohio Dominican University’s main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road. Parking is available in the Visitors Lots directly west of Sunbury Road.
