Ohio Dominican Presidential Lecture Series Presents PBS Host Ray Suarez

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Dominican University will welcome Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,” on PBS. Suarez will be the keynote speaker for the university’s Presidential Lecture Series, on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in the Matesich Theatre in Erskine Hall on ODU’s main campus, 1216 Sunbury Road. The event is co-sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and WCBE 90.5 Radio.

Suarez has more than 30 years of experience in the news business. In 1999, he came to the NewsHour from National Public Radio, where he hosted the national call-in news program, “Talk of the Nation” since 1993. Prior to that time, he spent seven years covering local, national and international stories for the NBC-owned station, WMAQ-TV in Chicago. He also served as a Los Angeles correspondent for CNN; a producer for the ABC Radio Network in New York; a reporter for CBS Radio in Rome; and as a reporter for various American and British news services in London.

Suarez holds a bachelor's degree in African History from New York University; a master’s degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago; and has been awarded honorary doctorates by many colleges and universities. He was bestowed the Benton Fellowship in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Chicago, and the 2005 Distinguished Policy Leadership Award from UCLA’s School of Public Policy.

He wrote a first book, The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration, and has contributed to several others. His writings have been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and many other publications. His latest book, The Holy Vote: the Politics of Faith in America, examines the tightening relationship between religion and politics in America.

Suarez shared in NPR’s 1993-94 and 1994-95 duPont-Columbia Silver Baton Awards for on-site coverage of the first all-race elections in South Africa and the first 100 days of the 104th Congress. He has been honored with the 1996 Ruben Salazar Award from the National Council of La Raza; Current History’s 1995 Global Awareness Award; and the 2005 Distinguished Policy Leadership Award from UCLA’s School of Public Policy.

A life member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Suarez was a founding member of the Chicago Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Immediately following the presentation, there will be a book signing in Panther Plaza. ODU’s bookstore will be open before and after the lecture and will have The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration and The Holy Vote: the Politics of Faith in America for sale.
