Village to Child

Overview/Mission

Village to Child (VTC) was founded in spring 1994 on the campus of Ohio Dominican University. Known in the surrounding community also as Village 219, the program serves more than 80 students in its after-school program, 120 in its summer program, and hundreds more families annually. It is an academic support, mentoring, and educational development program which partners with local middle schools and service providers to offer services to families and youth residing in the 43219 zip code. Village to Child programming also includes career mapping, skill assessment, and referrals. More than 85% of Village to Child participants are minorities from socio-economically challenged backgrounds and represent a diverse spectrum of cultures and scholastic interests.

*Village to Child partnerships include Columbus Public Schools, the Junior League of Columbus, Department of Job & Family Services, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Mid Ohio Food Bank, Ohio Dominican University, the Columbus Youth Commission, Defense Finance and Accounting Service; Friends of the Village, the YWCA & more.

The program addresses the need for free academic support services and culturally specific programming for area youth to encourage academic development and higher rates of high school graduation. The target population is middle school students (grades 6, 7, & 8) in the 43219 zip code. The 43219 area code represents more than 20,502 individuals; 16,216 minority; or 79%.
