Division of Education
Perhaps no other career is as rewarding as that of teaching. Whether helping very young children take their first steps in learning to read or introducing the world of literature and the challenges of math to older children, encouraging others to reach their potential is the hallmark of a good educator.
At Ohio Dominican University , the Education degree is awarded in Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Intervention Specialist -- Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Intensive Needs -- and Secondary Teacher Education. All programs are focused on preparing graduates to successfully achieve state teaching licensure.
ODU Education students engage in a variety of field experiences, including student teaching and community service. This face-to-face interaction with children and parents prepares ODU students to successfully teach in public urban and suburban, as well as private school settings.
Our graduates are on the cutting edge of applying technology, as technology is integrated across the Education classrooms through technology classrooms and presentation rooms, incorporation of WebCT, video-conferencing, preparation of electronic portfolios, production of interactive CDs for use in field placement classrooms, and the use of laptop computers.
Graduates are also well-positioned for success in the job market. Ohio Dominican University has consistently been rated as effective by the Ohio Department of Education in the annual Report on the Quality of Teacher Education in Ohio. Details of that report (including pass rates of Praxis II exams) may be viewed on the Ohio Department of Education website.
- All undergraduate licensure programs are approved by the Ohio Department of Education according to National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education standards.
- ODU has relationships with more than 20 school districts where students can gain classroom experience.
- Students gain a minimum of 10 weeks of student teaching experience under the supervision and mentorship of experienced teaching faculty.
- A broad range of licensure programs allows you to select the program you want, from prekindergarten to specialized secondary disciplines.
The vast majority of ODU Education graduates pass the national Praxis II certification exam and are currently employed as teachers. With a developing shortage of qualified teachers, job prospects in education are currently very good. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Intense competition for good teachers is already underway among employers in many locations, with schools luring teachers from other states and districts with bonuses and higher pay."
