Project Jumpstart Dual Enrollment Program

What is Project Jumpstart (Dual Enrollment)?

The Ohio Dominican Project Jumpstart Dual Enrollment Program (Project Jumpstart) is a collaboration between ODU and local Diocesan high schools that allows academically advanced students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school. This program attempts to replicate, as closely as possible, a college environment in the nature and scope of reading, writing and laboratory assignments.

Benefits of Project Jumpstart

  • Enrich the educational opportunities of pre-college students who have demonstrated high academic ability.
  • Offers university-level credits for select courses taught to high school students by ODU-approved high school teachers.
  • Offers the opportunity to fulfill some core university requirements while still in high school.
  • Access to ODU resources such as tutoring, library and career development.
  • Allows participating students the opportunity to graduate with a high school diploma and college credit.
  • Offers the opportunity to begin a college education at a fraction of the cost.

How Does Dual Enrollment Work?

Each year your school communicates to ODU which courses they would like to offer from the available dual enrollment course listing. Once this request is made, your school then works on preparing an extensive application for both the instructor and the course. These applications are reviewed by ODU faculty and administrators to ensure that the high school faculty members meet the same hiring criteria as our on-campus adjuncts and that the proposed course meets the same learning outcomes as our on campus selections. The fact that your school participates in dual enrollment program is a testament to the quality and rigor of your schools academic programming.

Each student who chooses to participate in the dual enrollment program will need to complete an application and registration form. See the list of participating schools for your specific registration form. In addition, each student needs to submit a copy of their high school transcript.

Once the student has completed the dual enrollment course, a grade report will be issued by the Ohio Dominican University Registrar’s Office. The grade you receive from your high school instructor is the grade that is recorded on your ODU transcript.

How does my credit transfer to college once I graduate?

If you choose to attend Ohio Dominican University after graduation, you do not need to take any additional steps to have your dual enrollment credit transferred to your degree program. The application of dual enrollment credit towards your degree requirements will be automatic.

If you choose to attend elsewhere after graduation, you will need to request that an official ODU transcript be sent to the college or university you plan to attend. ODU does not send transcritps without your written request. Your official ODU transcritps may be obtained from the Registrars Office. The request must be in writing. The Transcript Request Form is available in the Registrars Office (ER 145) or on the ODU website here.

The acceptance of transfer credit is at the discretion of the receiving institution. College policies vary in regard to transfer credit. It is sometimes helpful to have the course description and the course syllabi available when you meet with the college official who will make the decision about transfer of credit.

If you are denied credit, talk with your academic advisor first. Then ask the Registrar what the school's policy is about college credits earned at other institutions. Be aware that some colleges make decisions about credit at the departmental or even faculty member level. Talking to the right people will make the difference. Nearly all colleges have some kind of appeals process. Even though you will be a new member of the academic community, you have the right to exercise this option.

What is the Cost?

The tuition for all dual enrollment courses is $260 per course for the 2008-2009 academic year. The application fee is waived for dual enrollment students.

How does Dual Enrollment differ from AP courses?

Students enrolled in high school Advanced Placement (AP) courses have the option of taking an AP exam.  Credits are awarded by the university they attend, based upon their test score.  For dual enrollment students the grade earned is the grade for the course, not the grade for one particular test. Dual enrollment courses allow students to develop an expanded body of knowledge and understanding, acquired over the course of a semester or year.
