The Academic English Transition Program provides nonnative English speaking students with a pathway into full-time study at Ohio Dominican.
Work with ODU faculty and staff, participate in activities with other ODU students, and take full advantage of a range of support services available to engage and succeed in the university community and beyond.

  • Admission Requirements
    Admission to the Academic English Transition (AET)Program

    To be admitted to the AET Program, an international student must have a ONE of the following:
    • Minimum TOEFL score of 60 iBT or 495 PBT; or
    • Minimum IELTS score of 5.5; or
    • Successful completion of ELS Level 109
    • Writing assessment during orientation


    Admission to ODU with Full Academic Course Load


    To be admitted to Ohio Dominican without participating in the AET Program, an international student must have a ONE of the following:

    • Minimum TOEFL score of 79 iBT or 550 PBT; or
    • Minimum IELTS score of 6.5; or
    • Successful completion of ELS Level 112

  • Program Details
    • The AET Program is designed specifically for academically qualified international students who are eligible for undergraduate admission into ODU, but have a TOEFL score between 60-79 or IELTS score between 5.5 - 6.5.
    • Students in the AET Program will participate in a series of high-quality upper-level English language courses covering a wide variety of skills while simultaneously completing ODU academic coursework for credit.
    • Students who successfully complete two semesters in the program should be prepared to begin full-time academic study in pursuit of their undergraduate degree.
    • Student can expect to earn up to 15-18 academic credits each semester.
    • In concert with improving the students' English proficiency, the AET Program supports a cultural knowledge component aimed at maximizing their potential for academic success at ODU by immersing them with the university, local, and U.S. cultures.
    • The AET Program provides a variety of excursions designed to expose students to local and regional cultures, and offers travel opportunities for students to visit other cities in the U.S.
  • Scholarships & Award Packages
    Students admitted for undergraduate study are eligible for merit scholarships, on-campus jobs, and more to help pay for tuition and housing.
    • ODU Merit Scholarship
      Scholarships of up to $15,000 for each year of study.
    • On-Campus Job Opportunities
      ODU has numerous on-campus work opportunities available to students.
    • Campus Housing Grant
      (For international students only)
      $2,000 supplemental grant for on-campus housing.
  • Course Descriptions

    The AET Program offers courses to support the non-native English speakers at Ohio Dominican University. Students enrolled in the AET Program are required to take these courses. All courses are 3 credits unless noted.

    Other students can take these courses as electives. Courses in the AET Program are listed under EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and ENG (English).

    • EAP 130 – Grammar: Complex Structures
      This course is aimed to help students develop their understanding of major aspects of advanced English grammar as well as accurate and appropriate uses of grammatical structures for academic expression.  

    • EAP 132 – Reading/Vocabulary I: Academic and Cultural Issues
      EAP 132 is a course designed to help multilingual learners develop their reading skills, expand their vocabulary, and amass the skills necessary for their ongoing development in the English language.

    • EAP 133  – Reading/Vocabulary II: Academic and Cultural Issues
      As a continuation of EAP 132, this course covers learning strategies developed through reading and discussion of academic and culturally-relevant texts.

    • EAP 134 – Listening/Speaking I: Academic Discourse
      EAP 134 is a course designed to help multilingual learners who wish to develop their listening and speaking skills for academic contexts in English. 

    • EAP 135 – Listening/Speaking II: Intercultural Communication for Non-Native Speakers of English
      As a continuation of EAP 134, this skill-building course examines the intersection of the English language and U.S. culture. 

    • EAP 185A - Individualized Tutorial (1-3 credits)
      This course is available for students who need additional support with their English.  Tutorials are individually tailored to the needs of the students.

    • ENG 100A – Basic Composition for Nonnative Speakers of English - listed under English, offered by the AET Program
      ENG 100A is a writing course designed for English language learners.

  • Sample Course Schedule
    While in the AET Program, students are advised to simultaneously take academic courses that will meet their degree program requirements.

    Suggested courses suitable for AET students include (but are not limited to ) art, business, mathematics, computer science, exercise science, and music. Below is an example of a course plan for an AET student.
