Art Education Licensure Program

  • Youth girls basketball coach
  • PTA volunteer
  • Substitute teacher

Why did you choose to attend Ohio Dominican University?
I chose to attend Ohio Dominican because I was interested in ODU's Art Education licensure program and the staff was very responsive to all of my questions about getting started. The transition to ODU was quite easy; I received my bachelor’s degree from a big university and I have truly enjoyed the small university feel of ODU. The student body, regardless of age or station of life, is very welcoming and helpful. I have enjoyed all of my professors and I feel that they are personally invested in every student’s education and future.

Have you participated in any internships?
I have been placed in a few classrooms for observation and student teaching, and they’ve both been good experiences. I know I will stay in contact with my cooperating teachers, so I do think that will help me in my career.

What is your most memorable moment at ODU?
We recently completed an art lesson in my Art Methods class with some at-risk youth. They were amazing kids and so happy to be with us creating art. It was rewarding to watch their faces be filled of excitement and happiness. I hope we do it again.

What is one unique experience you’ve had at ODU that has helped you grow personally, professionally and/or spiritually?
My interactions with my art professors have really helped shape me into the kind of teacher and artist that I want to be. They set such amazing examples and each brings something unique. Rebecca Morton is always so excited about her students’ work that it is contagious. She is encouraging and gets you to really take risks and enjoy the process. Eliana Calle Saari can be stern, but she forces you to push through your barriers and insecurities. Somehow, she creates a shift in your head and you’re able to draw and see things differently. Dr. Knowles loves all of her students and their success is deeply personal to her. She is supportive and such a wealth of knowledge, and you just know that she will always welcome you back and help you in the future if you ever need it. I really don't want to stop being a student here.

Why are you proud to be an ODU student?
I am proud to be an ODU student because my classmates are all very encouraging and motivated people. It really feels like a community here. I can't say enough about how wonderful my professors are; they really care about their students as individuals.
