Augustine Kposowa Student of the Week

Columbus, Ohio

  • Student of the Week

Why did you choose to attend Ohio Dominican University?
I chose to attend ODU because it’s close to home and it has small class sizes. I also chose it because it ranks well as a university in the Midwest.

How do you stay involved at ODU?
The World Student Club meetings are my absolute favorite to attend because I get to meet people from different parts of the world. A good deal of what I have learned, and continue to learn is mindboggling, but it also lets me understand the world better. The United States is one country in one part of the world, but there are nearly 200 countries in other parts of the world to explore! The club also reflects my wish to travel around the world someday.

Have you participated in any internships?
I am currently in a social media internship. Since my bosses are busy with other aspects of running the business, my job is to create advertisements, post them online, and monitor the number of people and comments they post. The goal is to promote the business on social media and bring as many potential customers to the website as possible. Even though it’s an unpaid internship, it has the potential to become a full-time job.

What is your most memorable moment at ODU?
Nothing beats my very first day at ODU's Stepping Stones program – there were celebrations, parties, and I made new friends. This woke me up to realize that I was truly in college and a whole new chapter of life was about to begin.

What is one unique experience you've had at ODU that’s helped you grow personally, professionally and/or spiritually?
I had a great opportunity to go on a study abroad trip to Guatemala. I am so happy that there are program like that here at ODU. Education or academics is one thing, but experience is another. One moment that stands out to me occurred when I met with a person who spoke almost entirely Spanish. I studied Spanish in high school and college, and have also completed projects and taken tests in Spanish. However, this situation was the ultimate test – actually having a conversation with a native Spanish-speaker! There was nobody around who could speak or understand both languages, and so this was something I had to do on my own. We both adapted, improvised and sought to understand each other with all the keywords, body language and creativity we could muster. In the end we made our points clear and were both so happy to have met.

How has ODU helped you connect your passion with a purpose?
I was able to change my major and add a minor to my profile after I discovered my true interest. At ODU, I’ve also had an opportunity to join clubs and attend events to get a sense of where my passion is. ODU is the perfect place to explore options, change options and try again.

Why are you proud to be an ODU student?
I love ODU's small, close-knit community. It is easy to join clubs and make friends. It's also a fun place to be! Be proud for WE ARE THE PANTHERS!
