Master of Arts TESOL

ODU's Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) with licensure is an advancement of our long and rich tradition of equipping educators to teach English language learners.

The Master of Arts in TESOL is designed for those who seek to expand their knowledge, skills and disposition for teaching in this important area. Graduates who take an additional course along with passing the Praxis I and Praxis II exams, will be prepared to acquire the TESOL Multi-Age Endorsement License in Ohio ; the M.A. in TESOL degree also prepares those who wish to pursue a doctoral degree in TESOL.

The Master's Program in TESOL offers:

  • Firm foundation in TESOL history, principles and practices, as well as current research methods and professional development
  • Preparation to advocate for English language learners and address issues that affect them in the classroom and the community
  • Preparation to make important contributions to TESOL, education and community service through coursework and research, including a final project
  • Understanding of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics as well as sounds, forms, structures, meanings and use of the English language
  • Understanding of language processes and literacy development, first and second language acquisition and variables related to language learning and language proficiency
  • Appreciation for the nature, role and content of culture in education, including consideration of students' diverse backgrounds, cultural identities, language and literacy development and academic achievement
  • Access to, and proficiency with, technological tools, print and non-print resources, including audiovisual materials that facilitate access to language proficiency and performance
  • Extensive field experience with students who are learning English as a second language

Requirements for a TESOL Endorsement (Pre-K - 12):

In accordance with the requirements for holders of teaching certificates or licenses seeking additional licensure, a student who wishes to earn TESOL endorsement at ODU must complete a minimum of twelve credits at ODU including TSL 500 and TSL 590.
