Description
This course will examine the diversity and fragility of tropical ecosystems and ecosystem function. The struggles of implementing conservation practices in a country with widespread poverty will be explored through the visitation of conservation sites and will provide a basis for discussion of conservation policy and practice.
Objectives
Knowledge
- Identify the main characteristics, species and functions of reef, mangrove, salt marsh and forest ecosystems of the tropics.
- Explain methods of sustainable development in the tropics.
- Identify different methods of conservation.
Skills
- Classify ecosystems based on their constituent species and hydrology.
- Identify species through the use of dichotomous keys.
- Evaluate conservation plans in light of concerns for environment, economics, and equity.
- Apply understandings of worldwide conservation to critique the effects of personal and institutional choices.
Dispositions
- Appreciate the diversity of life and the complexity and function of natural systems.
Costs
Program Fee= $2700 (approximate cost)
Tuition = $880
Included in these costs is the purchase of carbon offsets to compensate for the carbon dioxide emitted in our travels.
