ART 185 The Art of Ancient Greece
Use the Acropolis as your classroom and walk along the same paths as Constantine, Virgil, Sappho, Michelangelo, and Sophonisba Anguissola!  ART 185 The Art of Ancient Greece and Rome will take you on a breathtaking tour of some of the most important sites in the Western tradition.  We'll begin our adventure in Rome and study the material culture of the ancient Romans IN (and I do mean in) such places as the Pantheon and the Forum and end with the breathtaking High Renaissance Sistine Chapel.  We'll have a special day experiencing everyday life in ancient Rome as we explore the well-preserved remains of the city of Pompeii.  The awe-inspiring geography of the Aegean and the Greek Isles will be our starting point for a week learning about the emergence of Hellenic culture from the ancient Minoan kingdom on the isle of Crete to the controversial grandeur of the Acropolis.

ENG 185 Studies in Contemporary Greek Literature
Most students remember vividly the characters from Greek and Roman literature they encountered in their first Humanities course--from the climactic battle between Achilles and Hector, to Antigone's defiant rejection of Creon's law, to Aeneas' journey to the underworld in pursuit of his destiny. A trip to Rome and Athens provides the perfect opportunity to deepen your understanding of the ancient world through its literature. As we travel to Rome we will encounter the exquisite lyrics of one of Rome's greatest poets, Catullus, whose love for a certain woman is matched only by her disdain for him. And as we explore Athens and the Greek isles, we will read about Medea, a woman who would stop at nothing--not even the murder of her own children--to get revenge. But we won't spend all our time in the ancient world, because contemporary Greek literature is also rich and exciting; from the poems of Constantine Cavafy to the recent works of Nobel-prize winner Odysseus Elytis, there's a whole world waiting to be discovered.
