Evaluating Sources in
the Context of IDS179:
Evaluating begins with inquiry and exploration
into a text or other media (news, radio program, etc.). Good evaluation
requires the following:
- inquisitiveness
- ability to imagine
- appreciation of different points of view
- willingness to engage with the author and invest time with the text.
Critical evaluation can include assessing
and measuring at least four core areas:
- value;
- nature;
- quality; and
- significance of what one evaluates.(1)
Evaluating answers a number of questions, including: "Is this text
useful to me?" "Is this valuable?" "Is this worthwhile?"
"What can I learn from this?" "How might I apply this to
my situation?"
This section will help you to begin the journey of evaluating effectively
