Reference Resources
in the Context of IDS179:
Reference resources can play
an important role in the process of human inquiry by helping answer certain
questions that will arise as you engage in ideas, texts, and information
for your class assignments, within your profession, and in other situations
requiring information.
Inquiry begins with basically three processes:
- observation
- engagement with an idea
- critical thinking
In response to one's own understandings and questions,
inquiry then becomes a process of questioning and searching for information,
(1) which is then evaluated and converted into knowledge
useful to the inquirer.
"Inquiry-based activities cause us to revise
our prior understandings and deepen our understanding of the world.
Through inquiry we develop important skills such as careful observation,
reasoning, critical thinking, and the ability to justify or refute our
existing knowledge."(2)
