What is a Library Catalog Record?

Each item in the ODU Library has a record in the
ODU Library Catalog. Each record includes the following information:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Publisher city, publisher name
  • Publication date
  • Library of Congress Subject Headings
  • Chapter titles or content notes for many, but not all, items
  • Call number
  • Library location
  • Information on whether an item is available, is currently checked out to another library patron, or is missing

Use the information in an item's record to:

  • Verify you have found the exact item you are looking for (right author? right year? etc.)
  • Determine if the item you would like is available
  • Locate the item in the library
  • Read a description of an item or its contents to help determine if it is something you would like
