A team of seven Ohio Dominican University (ODU) Public Relations and Marketing Communications students has taken top honors in the EdVenture Partners (EVP) and American Petroleum Institute’s (API) “Educating Our Energy Future” national competition. As part of the competition, teams were asked to develop a public relations campaign that helps to raise awareness among America’s youth about the important roles that natural gas and oil play in everyday life.

The students and their adviser, ODU academic program director and assistant professor of Public Relations, Natalie Kompa, submitted their proposal in fall 2018, and were among four teams invited to present their idea to executives with EVP and API on Jan. 9, 2019 in Washington, D.C. A panel of judges selected the ODU team as having the winning proposal, awarding them the top prize of $10,000. The money will benefit ODU’s Public Relations Student Society of America chapter and its student-run public relations firm, 1911 PR, of which all the participating students are members.

The team’s proposal, “The Power Up Passport,” focused on creating educational materials and messaging to help teach grade school students about the many uses of natural gas and oil in today’s society, as well as steps being taken by the industry to reduce its overall impact on the environment.

“Our team’s professionalism, final product and success in this competition speak volumes about the high quality of ODU’s Public Relations and Marketing Communications program,” said Steven Jankowski, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio. “We’re extremely proud to have created a completely turnkey product that can be implemented in the real world by educators that utilizes our messaging to educate students on this important topic. We’re tremendously grateful for the support we’ve received from the campus community, especially our faculty adviser, Natalie Kompa.”

“This experience has been incredibly valuable as it relates to professional development and collaborative work,” said Myrissa Stalter, a senior from Reynoldsburg, Ohio. “Coming in first place is such a surreal feeling; all of our hard work paid off. As a result of this competition, I am confident that we are better equipped to pursue professional opportunities in the exciting public relations industry.”

ODU’s team was comprised of the following students: Steven Jankowski ’19 from Cincinnati, Ohio; Myrissa Stalter ’19 from Reynoldsburg, Ohio; Jacob Carpenter ’20 from Dublin, Ohio; Rachel Ryan ’19 from Columbus, Ohio; Anna Ficker ’19 from Cincinnati, Ohio; Grace Frantz ’21 from Dayton, Ohio; and Alexis Young ’21 from Columbus, Ohio.
