I am a writing teacher and poet.

My research interests include composition pedagogy, specifically first-year writing and basic writing courses. I am also interested in the intersection between creative writing and composition instruction, and have, of late, been primarily focused on teacher research and reflection.

I recently published two poems in OPEN: Journal of Arts & Letters, and have a forthcoming poem in Barstow & Grand. I have had pop culture writing recently featured on SIXTYEIGHT2OHFIVE and publish music and film reviews where I can.

I am currently working on a collaborative book chapter on alternative writing pedagogies that are explicitly anti-racist and another collaborative chapter on using storytelling as a method of writing instruction to better support multilingual learners.

In my courses, you can expect to approach things creatively; I never got over the power of workshopping, of having readers experience your writing - regardless of genre - and in the comfort of finding a community of fellow writers to grow and develop. We often explore texts and subjects in popular culture, always returning to ourselves, and how our voices can contribute to the music of our worlds. In addition to college writing instruction, I have also done youth arts education programs in Metro Detroit and in San Francisco, California.

At home, I have two miniature dachshunds. In my office, I have an extensive music library on vinyl, CD, and cassette. There is also a theatrical-sized poster to the 1996 cinema masterpiece Twister. Come see them any time.

I am excited to have come home to Columbus. I am a massive fan of the Crew, casual fan of baseball, food (both eating and cooking), board, card, and video games, and an occasional pop culture and music critic. See some of my poetry and other work at tonydegenaro.com.
