Dr. Matthew Ponesse, a Professor of History at Ohio Dominican University, has found a creative and unexpected way to connect a global audience with the Middle Ages—through memes.
As the creator of the viral Instagram account @medievalistmatt, Dr. Ponesse blends his academic expertise with his sense of humor, producing content that draws parallels between medieval history and modern-day culture. His account has amassed more than 187,000 followers from around the world, including history buffs, educators, students, and meme lovers alike.
“You know, there is no point in teaching history as if it is done and doesn’t really serve a purpose. History continues to resonate and inform,” Ponesse explained. “I look at these [medieval] images and think, ‘Do they remind me of anything that is current?’ I love looking at expressions in medieval art, because when I look at the expression, I see side-eye, I see eye rolls.”
What began as a way to connect with his students has turned into a viral phenomenon, bringing increased attention not only to the study of history but also to Ohio Dominican. Through witty captions, timely references, and clever visuals, Dr. Ponesse makes history accessible, engaging, and surprisingly relatable.
“I love using this account to promote the university, and I have connected with people who have become students here,” the professor said. “If it attracts people to the university and makes people aware of what great things are happening here, great. I want to engage with students, and I want people to know about Ohio Dominican.”
In combining scholarship with creativity, Dr. Ponesse continues to spark curiosity about the past—while also showing that even medieval history has a place in the digital age.
