Ohio Dominican offers two options for students to earn a nursing degree through a partnership with Mount Carmel College of Nursing (MCCN).

Transfer to the Mount Carmel Advanced Placement Program or  Second Degree Accelerated Program programs is guaranteed for up to 15 students per academic year per program (i.e., 15 for APP and 15 for SDAP), provided those students:

  • complete the coursework described below with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.000 or greater;
  • and a minimum grade of "C" in all required coursework.

Regardless of the number of credits accepted in transfer, residency requirements mandate a minimum of 30 semester credits to be earned at Ohio Dominican University for the 2-Year Pre-Nursing program.

Students entering the 3 1/2-Year or 4-Year option will have a designated major (e.g. Biology, Exercise Science, Chemistry) and will follow the course requirements and learning outcomes of that major.

2-Year Advanced Placement Program

Overview

The 2-Year Option prepares the student to enter the Advanced Placement Program (APP) at Mount Carmel College of Nursing, which begins in May of each year.

Students will spend the first two years at ODU in the Pre-Nursing Program taking classes to fulfill the admission requirements for the AAP. These classes will also fulfill the requirements to earn an Associate of Science degree in Health Sciences from ODU. The remaining two years of work are completed at MCCN, who will award the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

This option is good for students who wish to complete their education in four years (compared to the five years it typically takes in the Second Degree Accelerated Program).

To be admitted to the 2-Year Pre-Nursing Program, a student must have taken the following high school courses and earned at least a grade of C in the courses:
  • 4 units English
  • 3 units Mathematics (including Algebra II)
  • 3 units Laboratory Science (including Biology and Chemistry)
  • 3 units Social Science
  • 2 units Foreign Language (Sign Language accepted) – Recommended
  • 1 unit Visual or Performing Art – Recommended
A student who has not taken these courses or who earned less than a grade of C in them must take the equivalent courses at ODU and earn at least a grade of C prior to admission to the 2-Year Pre-Nursing Program. This may impact the time necessary to fulfill the requirements for admission to MCCN's APP Program.

Students who are admitted to ODU and complete as Associate of Science degree in Health Sciences through our pre-nursing program automatically meet the admission criteria for MCCN's APP.

3.5 or 4-Year Second Degree Accelerated Program

Overview

The 3.5 or 4-Year Pre-Nursing option prepares the student to enter the Second Degree Accelerated Program (SDAP) at MCCN, which begins the January following graduation from ODU.

Students spend three and a half to four years at ODU earning a bachelor's degree in a designated major (e.g. Biology, Exercise Science, Chemistry) and as such, will follow the course requirements and learning outcomes of that major. The degree must include all the requirements for MCCN prerequisite courses.

Upon successful completion of all required courses, the student will be awarded the bachelor degree from ODU.

Students are then admitted to MCCN to pursue a second bachelor's degree. The SDAP take three continuous semesters (spring, summer, fall) to complete. Upon completion, MCCN will award the second degree, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

This option is good for students who:
  • want a broad liberal arts degree
  • wish to play college sports at ODU
  • want to become an RN
  • want to explore a career in nursing or the health-care field
Students who are admitted to ODU and complete a bachelor's degree through our pre-nursing program automatically meet the admission criteria for MCCN's SDAP.
