Staying Safe On and Off Campus

90% of campus crimes are crimes of opportunity. You reduce your chances of being a crime victim by reducing the opportunity. By watching out for yourself and others, we can all contribute to a safe campus environment.

Some Tips for Safety

  • Do not walk alone on campus at night. Use the escort program or walk with a group. 
  • Stay in well-lit, well-traveled area; avoid dark and isolated places.
  • Always lock your car, roll up your windows and keep valuables out of sight in your car.
  • Know the locations of emergency phones where you could call for help if needed.
  • Do not jog or bike at night or in unfamiliar areas.
  • If someone tries to rob you, give up your valuables without resistance. Your life is more important than your possessions.
  • Do not put your name, address, phone number, license number or other identifiers on your key chain. Doing so will lead a criminal to your belongings if you lose your keys.
  • Do not lend your keys to anyone or leave your door unlocked for a friend.
  • Never prop open residence hall main entrance/exit doors. This is an open invitation to intruders.
  • Do not allow unknown persons to piggy-back behind you to gain access to residence halls. Do not be afraid to ask for ID or call for help.

 

Need help on campus?

Any student, staff member or visitor may request a security escort at any time. This service is encouraged for those walking on campus after dark.

Call 251-4700 to request an escort anywhere on campus. An officer will meet you and walk or drive you to your destination.

The Escort Program is to be utilized for safety purposes, or for those who have temporary or permanent disabilities. 

There are five outside emergency phones located throughout campus. These phones are marked with blue and white "Security Phone" signs. Simply push the button and you will be connected to an officer.

Use these phones to request an escort, report suspicious behavior and other security-related requests.

All crime victims and witnesses are strongly encouraged to immediately report crimes to the Department of Public Safety and the appropriate police agency.

Prompt reporting will assure timely warning notices on campus and timely disclosure of crime statistics.
