Application Questions

The program begins in January each year.

Applications must be submitted electronically to CASAA (Centralized Application Service for Anesthesiologist Assistants) by July 15 of each year.

The ODU AAS Program accepts 25 qualified applicants per cohort.

Often students obtain their bachelor’s degree in a science field, however this is not required. Applicants should achieve above-average grades in the required prerequisite coursework.

The minimum overall and science grade point average (GPA) is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Please note a GPA of 3.0 or higher is no guarantee of admission.

There is no preference for either test and no minimum score requirement. However, the scores must be within five years of admission and submitted directly to CASAA for verification.

The required prerequisite courses are listed here. We recommend that applicants complete all prerequisite coursework within ten years of enrollment in ODU’s AAS Program.

Students may not waive any course within the AAS Program curriculum, nor does it accept students for advanced standing. This includes graduates of foreign medical schools.

The program curriculum is subject to change to best meet the needs of the Anesthesiologist Assistant profession and our students.

Our program encourages applicants to obtain more than the minimum required 8 hours of anesthesia shadowing experience. Applicants that have significant shadowing hours and/or previous direct patient care experience are valued in considering the admission qualifications of each applicant.

We received over 540 verified applications in the last application cycle for 25 seats. Our incoming cohort averaged an overall GPA of 3.68, a science GPA of 3.6, a GRE score of 312, a MCAT score of 506, and 1,730 clinical hours.

If you need assistance finding shadowing opportunities, please contact the program coordinator to potentially receive assistance.
